Burnout, Exhaustion and Boundaries

Burnout rarely arrives suddenly. For many unpaid carers, it builds slowly over time.

You may feel constantly tired, emotionally drained, or disconnected from yourself. Yet you still tell yourself you just need to carry on.

Burnout isn’t a personal failing. It’s a natural response to long-term stress without enough rest or support.

Preventing Carer Burnout With Better Boundaries

When boundaries are missing, or not maintained, there’s little space for recovery.

Carers often keep going in spite of feeling exhausted, ignoring early warning signs until their wellbeing is affected.

Boundaries create breathing space. They allow moments of rest, reflection, and recovery.

Even small boundaries — allowing yourself a short break, asking for help, or reducing one demand — can help prevent burnout from deepening.

Your wellbeing matters too.

Signs of Carer Burnout

Burnout signs can include:

  • constant tiredness
  • irritability
  • numbness
  • feeling overwhelmed by small things

Remember: you’re not weak for feeling this way. While the role of carer is a often deeply rewarding, it can also be physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausting. Many carers find themselves feeling stretched too thin.
